The Amazing Spider-Man puts you in the shoes of the world's most acrobatic superhero, and the developers do a decent job of capturing what it's like to swing through New York City's streets. By the standards of Android technology, this is an impressive looking game. While it obviously can't keep up with the latest generation Spider-Man themed games, the game is a fun diversion that gets navigation pitch perfect.

That's not to say navigation is particularly complicated. Simple swipes and taps are used to reposition the camera, swing through the city, shoot webbing, or climb walls. And while it doesn't give the player a whole lot of nuanced control, it does allow the scenery and the animations to really sing. The combat consists of a rhythm-inspired system of blocks and strikes that's virtually identical to many mobile fighting ports. The camera can be a bit finicky, but the controls generally work just fine. There's just nothing here you haven't seen before.

This is ostensibly an open world game, though it's a bit too lonely to really be considered one. Missions are distributed by NPCs, and some tasks have you exploring the city freely, but the streets are sparsely populated with NPCs, cars, and activities. Despite feeling somewhat lifeless, the sense of place here is strong. While it draws from the 2012 film for inspiration, the look here is quintessential Spidey. The appearance of supervillains is rare, but they generally employ interesting spins on old designs.

These missions don't amount to much, generally. Go to a quest giver, engage in a short arena sequence with invisible walls or go hunting for objectives, then move on to the next task. When there's joy to be had here, it comes from simple exploration. While the game itself feels and looks like Spider-Man, there's simply too little content here to justify it for most users. It feels more like a proof of concept than an actual game.
